Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area
Fall is a great time for hiking, and to get you out in the park, the Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area (SCSRA) have put together two new hiking clubs: “I Hiked ‘Em All” and the “100-Miler Club”. Members of the first club have hiked all 81 miles of trail at South Cumberland; members of the second have hiked 100 miles at South Cumberland, not necessarily including every trail.
To help get people started, the Friends of SCSRA have put together a description of 14 day hikes that cover all 81 miles of park trails in just under 120 miles of hiking. This, as well as a hiking log, may be downloaded from <http://www.friendsofscsra.org/>.
Interested hikers should go by the park visitors’ center on Highway 56 in Monteagle and pick up the two trail maps: Savage Gulf & Stone Door and Fiery Gizzard & Buggytop, plot their strategy, and take off!
The South Cumberland trails explore rims, gorges, and forests from near Beersheba Springs in the north to Lost Cove in the south. The Savage Gulf & Stone Door Trails map details the extensive system of trails and landmarks including Greeter Falls, Great Stone Door, Savage Falls, Suter Falls, and Horsepound Falls.
The Fiery Gizzard & Buggytop Trails map includes the Visitors’ Center, the Grundy Forest area, Raven Point, Little Gizzard Creek and Foster Falls on one side; and the Buggytop Trail and Lost Cove Cave in Carter State Natural Area on the reverse.
Members in the clubs will receive a certificate, bumper sticker, and bandannas decorated with the park’s trail maps, as well as a year’s membership in the Friends of SCSRA. To apply, submit your name, address, a copy of your trail list with the date each trail was hiked, and a check or money order for $25, payable to Friends of SCSRA, to South Cumberland State Park Visitor Center, 11745 US Hwy. 41, Monteagle TN 37356-7609.
